The History of the Boonville Gun Club

Preserving Tradition, Promoting Sportsmanship, and Building Community Since the 1800s

Early Beginnings: Late 1800s

The Boonville Gun Club traces its origins to the late 19th century, when local sportsmen began gathering for informal shooting matches near what is now the Warrick County 4-H Fairgrounds. These weekend shoots were more than competitions—they were community events filled with camaraderie, food, and friendly rivalry.

Boonville Enquirer, May 14, 1881: “A gathering of local sportsmen for a spring shoot near the county fairgrounds drew applause for Mr. William H. Gentry and Mr. Amos R. Hagan.”

These early gatherings laid the foundation for a club that would become a fixture in Warrick County’s sporting life.

Formal Incorporation and Establishment: 1934

On June 29, 1934, the Boonville Gun Club was officially incorporated as a non-profit recreational organization. The club’s mission was to promote safe shooting practices, foster sportsmanship, and create a lasting institution for future generations.

Following incorporation, the club sought a permanent home. A group of dedicated members and local supporters came together to donate and secure land on North Rockport Road, just two miles from the Boonville courthouse. While the exact names of all donors from that era are not fully documented, their generosity and vision laid the groundwork for the club’s enduring presence.

Early Leadership and Legacy

The club’s early leadership included prominent local sportsmen and civic-minded individuals who helped shape its direction. Over the decades, many have contributed to its growth, including longtime officers and volunteers who maintained the facilities, organized events, and mentored new shooters.

Growth and Expansion: 1950s–1980s

As interest in shooting sports grew, so did the club’s facilities and reputation:

  • Construction of trap and skeet fields

  • Installation of lighted shooting areas for evening events

  • Addition of a non-smoking clubhouse extension in 1987

  • Hosting of ATA (Amateur Trapshooting Association) registered shoots, attracting competitors from across the Midwest

Today & Beyond: Investing in the Next Generation

The Boonville Gun Club remains a cornerstone of Warrick County’s sporting heritage. Located at 31 North Rockport Road, the club hosts monthly ATA shoots from May through September, offers instruction for newcomers, and provides food and ammunition during events.

Youth Engagement: BHS Trapshooting Team

The club proudly supports the Boonville High School Trap and Skeet Team, which introduces students to competitive shooting in a safe, structured environment. Through coaching, mentorship, and access to facilities, the club helps young athletes develop discipline, confidence, and sportsmanship.

ATA/AIM Youth Program

The club also participates in the ATA’s AIM Program (Academics, Integrity, and Marksmanship), which provides opportunities for middle and high school students to compete, earn scholarships, and grow as leaders. Through partnerships with schools and community organizations, the club is expanding shooting sports across Warrick County and the wider region.

Leadership Today

The club is currently led by President Larry Ellis, who has served with distinction and is preparing for retirement after years of dedicated service. His leadership has helped strengthen the club’s programs, facilities, and outreach—especially its commitment to youth development.
